Do you skip the conditioner?

GOOD HAIR CARE MAY HEAD OFF HAIR LOSS :

Do you skip the conditioner?

Dermatologist recommend using a conditioner after every shampoo. While a conditioner cannot repair hair, it can increase shine, decrease static electricity, improve strength, and offer some protection from harmful UV rays. This, in turn, can significantly improve the look of damaged or weathered hair.

ACNE FACTS AND EXPECTATIONS OF AN ACNE PATIENT

ACNE FACTS AND EXPECTATIONS OF AN ACNE PATIENT :

When a patient of acne visits me , its a protocol to ask history or the patient usually starts telling herself or himself. In girls, Usual protocol is to investigate the causes like Polycystic ovarian disease(PCOD), Hyperprolactinemia etc and hence investigations play a very pivotal role in acne treatment ; otherwise the acne is cured only till you are taking treatment. Many a times , acne patients get scared by the list of investigations but one should understand the relevance and importance of these tests AS the hormonal changes are becoming very common in girls as well as ladies due to late marriages, late pregnancies and very importantly LIFESTYLE CHANGES. That’s why, PCOD is becoming very common in the age group of 16 – 40 years.

ACNE TREATMENT is a very long treatment AND DEMANDS A LOT OF PATIENCE & COOPERATION. There is no MAGIC OVERNIGHT. Acne takes 4 to 6 months to vanish completely and total duration varies between 9 months to 2 years (in hormonal imbalance/ PCOD PATIENTS). But as per the human nature, acne patient expects it to vanish overnight which UNFORTUNATELY NEVER HAPPENS AND patient becomes restless and impatient during the treatment.

Many a times, patient takes medicine, he feels dizziness, discomfort , loose motions, gastric pain--- do go to your DERMATOLOGIST FOR RECONSULT ---So that you don’t stop treatment in between . Don’t get disheartened. DO you know ---EVEN PARACETAMOL and ANTIALLERGICS (antihistaminics) CAN CAUSE WORST SKIN REACTIONS. SO, Revisit the doctor if you are having so many problems WITH YOUR PRESCRIPTION .

ACNE--- DON'T  SQUEEZE
Another common issue is DARKENING OF SKIN with the gels prescribed by the doctor. Rarely gels can cause slight darkening of skin ; But it gets aggravated ‘coz patients usually don’t use their sunscreen religiously every 3 hourly as advised by their dermatologists.

One important complaint is DRYNESS OF THE SKIN –with ORAL & LOCAL APPLICATION MEDICATIONS . Do visit your dermatologist for that SPECIAL MOISTURISER FOR ACNE PRONE SKIN rather than stopping the treatment .

Try to remember the MOST IMPORTANT POINT--- Your dermatologist is also a human being. HE OR SHE CAN’T MEMORIZE ALL THE PATIENT’S NAMES / FACE / CASE HISTORIES when you call the doctor as he / she is treating so many patients everyday. YES DEFINITELY DOCTOR CAN TELL THE PATIENT AFTER THE PATIENT TELLS " the name of the MEDICINE" . If you are not satisfied on telephone as your dermatologist can’t recall everything WITHOUT ACTUALLY SEEING YOU IN PERSON OR PRESCRIPTION. NEVER FORGET YOUR PRESCRIPTION when you visit your doctor .

PATIENCE, COOPERATION , SINCERITY AND COMPLETE COMPLIANCE TO THE TREATMENT IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS IN ACNE TREATMENT.

KNOW ROSACEA BETTER

FLUSHING, REDNESS, SPIDER VEINS, AND ACNE-LIKE LESIONS ON YOUR FACE : KNOW ROSACEA BETTER

Rosacea is a chronic problem involving midfacial region and occasionally the neck, scalp and eyes. It often begins with a tendency to blush or flush more easily than other people do.

With time, people who have rosacea may see permanent redness in the center of their face. The redness can slowly spread beyond the nose and cheeks to the forehead and chin.

Rosacea can cause more than redness. Rosacea can cause acne-like breakouts, visible blood vessels on the face, and dry, irritated eyes.

The skin also may tingle, burn, and feel hot. Touching the affected skin often makes the itch worse. Avoid standing or sitting next to a lit fireplace or stove. Wash with lukewarm, not hot, water. Harsh or overly drying skin care products can cause the skin affected by rosacea to itch. Treating the infection (Inflammation of the hair follicles-- folliculitis) often eliminates the itch. Avoid Rubbing, Scratching, and Using Topical Corticosteroids.  Long-term use of topical corticosteroids can cause side effects, such as thinning skin, stretch marks, and visible capillaries. Long-term use of corticosteroids also has been known to worsen rosacea.  To control the itch of rosacea, I generally recommend moisturizing topical antibiotics and/or pramoxine lotion. While getting the itch under control, cool — not cold — compresses can help as itching tends to be more severe when the skin is warm.

SKIN ALLERGY /  CONTACT DERMATITIS TO LIP BALM

A 26 year old young boy visited the clinic with complaint of burning, itching, redness and crack on the lips after single usage of Himalaya lip balm. He was able to feel the hardness of the lips.

He was treated successfully with anti histaminics, cold compresses and topical ointments

LESSON TO LEARN : Always use a lip balm prescribed by dermatologist as these days many flavoured lip balms are available in the market. Many patients report with allergy to lip balms, lip gloss, lip sticks due to duplicacy or poor quality and sometimes even toothpaste.
